The Asymptote

How do you say what you mean?

Editorial thought partnership for writers whose ideas outrun their drafts — essays, manuscripts, talks, and applications. Let me help you close the distance.

Method

Excavation before markup.

You can feel the vibe of what you're thinking, but you're convinced there's no way to give that vibe a shape. That concretization is where I can help most. I ask the questions that identify the roots of your ideas so that we can give them structure and punch.

Every engagement starts with diagnosis in the form of a memo on what the piece is doing, what it wants to do, and the distance between the two. How we dialogue from there is up to you: in writing, by call, or even in person. Only once we share a vision do we get involved in revision and rehaul, line work, and polishing.

For some clients, I can also hold the pen on your behalf. After enough excavation, I write the first draft in your voice, and you steer us in the refinement. The authorship stays yours; I only ever put on the page what our dialogue surfaced.

I'm someone engaged in writing about the hard work of thinking and knowing, so I can meet your argument on the merits, not just its grammar. I welcome a challenge.
